1912年9月，以孙中山为首的南京临时政府对旧学制加以修订，颁布了“壬子学制”。自该“壬子学制”公布至1913年8月，又陆续颁布了各种学校规程，对新学制有所补充和修改，于是又总合成一个更加完整的学制系统，即“壬子癸丑学制”。“壬子癸丑学制”反映了资产阶级在学制方面的要求，第一次规定男女同校，废止读经，充实了自然科学知识，将学堂改为学校。“壬子癸丑学制”是民国初期的中心学制。1922年11月，“中华民国”北洋政府以美国的学制为蓝本，颁布了壬戌学制，又称为“六三三制”“1922年学制”或“新学制”。
