ARP协议的作用是由IP地址求MAC地址。当源主机要发送一个数据帧时，必须在本地的ARP表中查找目标主机的MAC(硬件)地址。如果ARP表查不到，就广播一个ARP请求分组，这种分组可到达同一子网中的所有主机，它的含义是；“如果你的IP(协议)地址是这个，请回答你的MAC地址是什么。”收到该分组的主机一方面可以用分组中(发送结点的)的两个源地址更新自己的ARP表，另一方面用自己的IP地址与目标IP地址字段比较，若相符则发回一个ARP响应分组，向发送方报告自己的MAC地址，若不相符则不予回答。ARP请求通过广播帧发送，ARP响应通过单播帧发送给源站。
